The bar at the heart of the galaxy

Artist's impression of the Milky Way as a barred spiral. Click here for story. Some interesting news from the astronomers: a new infrared survey of our galaxy, the Milky Way, appears to confirm that it is a barred spiral galaxy, rather than just a regular spiral galaxy like all the Patrick Moore books I devoured as a child told me it was.

Still looks very pretty, whatever it is; especially if you click the thumbnail for the stunning full-size image of what the galaxy could look like from the outside.

By the way, no there aren’t thousands of such galaxies, since they would all be extinct by now, had they existed, which they didn’t since the universe is a mere 7,000 years old.

  21. Good point Josh.
And I was incorrect. Thousands of VISIBLE galaxies… billions visible from space. And that’s all that we know about.
